My Background
From a Mau Mau detainee’s son to Moderator of the Church
My grandfather, David Muhia, was born at Kibichoi in Kiambu County and later moved to Ngong in search of wider pastures for his large livestock. He was the father of Benson Githii — my father.
When the Mau Mau movement started, my father became a key prime mover. He was arrested and detained for seven years with hard labour. Meanwhile, the British expelled us from Ngong, and we finally settled at Gikambura in Kiambu County, where my mother’s parents lived.
It is here that I encountered a very harsh life. Many a time I went without food for days; my shorts and shirt were ragged and covered in patches. My mother could not afford the school fees of six shillings. Thank God, my father was finally released. Hustling for casual work, he managed to put me in school — and that is where my journey of service began.
